Introduction to wood staining

Our garden swing seat is a tubular steel construction with fabric-covered foam cushions. The cushions were left outside one day and got rained on. It was a slippery slope from there as they became more manky and the squirrels had their fun with it.

I wanted to rebuild it with something more carefree and found the cheap and plentiful source of IKEA bed slats and a staple gun.

Step 1: Requirements

One broken garden seat

LUROY / Sultan LIEN bed slats – size depends on the bench
you want to cover

Strips of 3mm plywood – length of your bench

Staple gun + staples – I used 8mm long staples

Weatherproof PVA glue

Sandpaper / Sander / Belt Sander

Tenon saw / Crosscut saw

Spacer blocks – more on this later

Step 2: Choose Your Materials

LUROY is the curved birch plywood slats which come in a range of sizes depending on your bed from 700mm to 900mm long. Sultan LIEN is similar but an older model. Choose slats closest to the height of the seat back and seat. I found mine in the Bargain Corner of IKEA at £7.00 for a pack of 31 (one was missing, hence the discount). It is always worth looking in Bargain Corner for great building materials like this.

The curved slats are best for the bench as they provide some spring cushioning to the seat and back making for a slightly more comfortable position in lieu of a contoured base and frame. I took a pack of 700mm slats for the back and then a pack of 900mm slats which I cut in half for the seat.

Step 3: Prepare Your Materials

Firstly, separate the slats from the webbing that they are stapled to and pull out the staples. The slats are coated with a varnish as a form of waterproofing which is great for this project as you can skip the finishing stage but not great for sticking pieces together with the PVA glue. I set up my belt sander with a stop block so I can sand off the bottom 50mm of varnish on the underside of each slat so I can glue and staple each one to the supporting plywood strip.

The seat of the bench was about 500mm deep so I cut the 900mm slats in half to 450mm and made up a front edge from two strips of plywood glued together to form a rebate for the slats to attach to.

Cut some plywood strips to attach the slats to. Mine were 1800 x 50 x 3mm and 3 off (2 for the back and 1 for the rear of the seat) and the rebated front edge is one piece 1800 x 50 x 10mm glued to a piece 1800 x 80 x 3mm. I also chamfered the leading edge for softness against the backs of outdoor knees. My plywood was not long enough so I had to scarf joint two pieces together to make the length but if you’re lucky to have long wood, bravo.

Step 4: Take Time, Make Spacers

The slats need to be spaced equally to allow for drainage 11and a bit of aesthetics and making some spacer blocks really saves time from measuring the position of each slat. My calculations required one pair of spacers 13mm wide for the back rest and another pair 11mm wide for the seat. I made mine from some dismantled clothes pegs and styrene strips I had around. These are wedged between the last secured slat and the next one you’ll secure.

Step 5: Glue and Staple

Apply some weatherproof wood glue to the sanded section of the slat, position the long plywood strip and use two staples through the strip into the slat to secure it whilst the glue cures. Use a try-square for the first few slats to ensure a square, 90 deg fix on both sides. Put your spacer blocks against the slat, position the next slat and staple again. Keep repeating until you’ve covered the whole span on the back and seat.

Step 6: Finish Finish

You’ll have two odd looking ladders which should get some more outdoor varnish to cover the plywood strips and the ends of cut slats for protection. I maintained the clearcoat of the existing varnish for speed and ease.
Attach the slats to the seat with a couple of screws and you’re ready to sit in comfort and swing life away. I like how the springy seat feels and would appreciate a Vote! If you also agree.

How to Stop Ikea Bed Slats Falling Through

How to Stop Ikea Bed Slats Falling Through

Do you have an IKEA bed with slats? You do! Are the slats underneath falling through, causing your bed to sag? It’s a frustrating experience, to say the least. There’s nothing worse than waking up only to realize you’re sinking—not to mention it’s terrible on your back. You need a fix, preferably a quick fix.

Below are two methods that are both easy to implement, one is quicker, but sloppy; the other being a much cleaner solution.

Prevent the Slats Falling with Velcro Strips

An ingenious method—and by far the best—is using velcro strips (View on Amazon) to stop the slats from falling through. You often see velcro stips used with floor mats to prevent slipping and sliding. Naturally, it works for an IKEA bed as well in the same way.

Important: As a homeowner, realizing that you need to waste another Saturday waiting for the landlord or handyman to come over to fix another damaged appliance is frustrating. It shouldn’t feel like the norm to constantly have damaged appliances and systems in your home since it can come to a huge cost at the end of each year.

The Home Improvement Solutions eBook covers everything you need to do in your home when it comes to maintenance and improvement so you can avoid wasting another weekend waiting for someone to come to your rescue.

The problem comes from you shifting your weight in bed. The simple act of turning will shift the bed to one side, jostling some of the slats underneath and ultimately making them fall. Hence, the reason your bed eventually sags.

Here’s what you do:

1. Start by removing the bed and the slats.

You need to reach the outer shell of the bed first. That’s where the fuzzy side of the velcro strip goes first. You have to place a single fuzzy strip of velcro (known as the “loop”) for each end of the slat for every slat. For example, if the bed has 10 slats, then two strips of the fuzzy side of velcro will be placed on the bed frame, two for each end of the slats.

2. Apply the loops (the fuzzy side) to the bed frame, right where the edge of the slats rest. Two for each slat. The loops have adhesive backings so remove the cover first. Afterwards, rub the strip so it adheres to the frame better.

3. Now rest the slats on the loops without adding the hooks (the rough side). This is to help measure where the hooks will go.

4. Uncover the adhesive baking on the hooks (the rough side) and apply them to each end of the slat.

5. Lay the slats into place along with the bed.

With the hooks and loops now coming together, any kind of shifting will prevent the slats from moving and ultimately keep your IKEA bed in place.

Prevent the Slats Falling with Duct Tape

Duct tape has a lot of uses, and one of them just so happens to be a practical way of keeping the slats for your IKEA bed from falling. Much in the same way velcro strips keep your bed in place, duct tape can work the same way. The one benefit duct tape has over velcro strips is that just about everyone has duct tape in their house.

1. Start by removing the bed and the slats.

2. Cut a strip of duct tape about six inches long and loop it. Do this twice for each slat.

3. Place the loop of duct tape on the bed frame where the slats get placed.

4. Lay the slats into place where the duct tape is.

Alternatively, you can apply the duct tape to the slats themselves if you’re having trouble lining up each strip. And if you want extra security, you can wrap an entire strip of duct tape around the middle of the slats (after they’ve been placed). It’ll prevent the slats from moving up and down.

You Need to Know This About Your Bed

If you’re noticing problems with your bed, you need to know what’s causing the issue and if you’ll need to get the bed repaired or replaced. Having a functioning bed is crucial for any home, and fixing it is just one form of home improvement, but there are many more.

If you want to save $100s on Home Repair, learn the most important home maintenance procedures, and increase the value of your home, you can download our Home Improvement Solutions book now. With it, you’ll learn about a wide range of home maintenance and improvement topics, and you’ll be able to make your home a better place to live in. There are also a bunch of tips in there that’ll save you loads of time and money when it comes to repairs, DIY, and general home hacks that you can’t find anywhere else.

Whether you are a new homeowner, have owned a home for years, renting, or just love home repair and improvement topics, our guide will give you an in-depth explanation of many everyday home maintenance procedures. A lot of our readers use this book to increase the value of their homes, and they’ve saved a lot of money on things like repair that would have cost a professional handyman $100s of dollars.

Bottom Line

While these are the two most common methods, anything that can force the slats into place is a method. For example, if the bed frame has holes you could drill holes into the slats and use zip ties. There’s room for creativity that’s really only limited by what’s available to you. With that said, duct tape is usually on hand and quick, but velcro strips are certainly cleaner, better suited, and frankly, prettier than an ugly row of duct tape.
